Tube Polishing
Contour Honing removes weld beads from seamed tube.
'Contour Honing' is a two-stage process for polishing the inside surface of stainless steel tube and aluminium extrusions to a surface finish as fine as 0.15µm Ra.
The heart of the Apperley Contour Honing process is a range of conformable honing stones, made from an abrasive impregnated Elastomer.
When subjected to pressure, the stones closely follow the uneven surface of the metal, seeping into all the flaws and defects. The process is carried out in two stages on high-speed automatic machines.
Stage one is a roughing operation using abrasive to remove weld bead material, draw marks and the familiar 'orange peel' pits as found in drawn material, leaving a blemish free surface.

The second stage consists of polishing the surface with even finer grades of abrasive until the required finish is achieved eg 180 grit abrasive gives a 0.4µm Ra finish, whereas a 320 grit abrasive gives a 0.15µm Ra finish.
The process is suitable for 20-200mm bore tube in wall thicknesses typically from 1.5mm to 2.0mm, but has also been successfully applied to tubes outside this range including fabricated pipes up to 500mm outside diameter, where both circumferential and longitudinal weld beads were removed by the new Apperley Contour Honing process.
Applications also include extruded aluminium used in fluid power, gas cylinders and high purity stainless steel tubes for the processing industries.
The finest finish - 0.15µm Ra - is an ideal preparation for electropolishing and is widely used in the pharmaceutical manufacturing and semiconductor industries.
