Tube Honing

For extra long tubes, Apperley can hone from both ends.

Apperley Honing has 6 horizontal machines varying in size from the smallest 2-metre stroke 'Jason' machine, up to the largest Barnes #6 machine, which can hone tubes up to 8000mm long and diameters of up to 750mm.

For extra long tube, up to 15 metres long, Apperley can hone from both ends, producing an invisible blend from end to end. Bore tolerance as tight as H8 can be maintained when honing 'turn arounds'.

Most Apperley tube honing is carried out on 'random' length tubes (6 to 8 metres long) within the bore range of 50-200mm diameter. Whilst steel is the most commonly specified material, the company is often called upon to machine aluminium, stainless steel, titanium, nimonics and hard chrome. Around 400 metres of cylinder tube can be succesfully processed during an average week.

Honing is most usually regarded as a bore finishing process, but Apperley are also able to apply their specialist honing skills to successfully achieve specific wall thicknesses.

Using ultrasonic inspection equipment the wall thickness of random length tubes can be reduced down to 1.00mm.

Jason 5000 Machine

Extra long tubes up to 9600mm can be honed with ease.
