Hand Honing
High precision Honing on valuable components.
'Hand Honing' is the generic term given to the honing of small parts up to around 50mm diameter, and is carried out on a variety of 'bench' type machines (although the latest CNC controlled machines have progressed somewhat from the type often found tucked away in the corner of general machine shops).
With 'Hand Honing' the parts are stroked back and forth, either by hand (hence the term) or in automatic fixtures.
Apperley's CNC machines run around the clock, honing brake parts and injectors for the motor industry, reliably producing components round and parallel to within 0.005mm, with a surface finish of 0.4µm Ra in batches of 1000 per day.
Apperley obtains its hand honing tooling from both Delapena and Sunnen and its independence allows it to select the optimum tooling regardless of supplier. With over 40 years of experience in hand honing, Apperley instinctively know which brand of tooling will give the best results.
Whichever tool is selected, Apperley's use of its own abrasives and experience gives it the edge over standard products and other honers who do not have the same resources available.
Much of the hand honing carried out is small batch work. Ultra high precision on valuable components, often the very last machining operation at the end of quite an exhaustive manufacturing process, which is why many of the UK's top aerospace and motorsport companies trust Apperley to deliver.
